Two things have been an absolute, unwavering constant in my life: art and a deep love for old things.

For as long as I can remember, I have been captivated by the history, craftsmanship, and stories embedded in vintage objects. If there is an estate sale, an antique market, or a hidden thrift shop corner waiting to be scoured, you can usually find me there.

Lately, my studio practice has been completely consumed by a beautiful intersection of these two passions. I’ve been taking the classic, timeless motifs found on historical tableware and giving them a fresh, modern life on wood panels.

The result? My brand-new Famille Rose series.

The Inspiration Behind the Pattern

This series is a direct, hand-painted homage to traditional Chinese Export Porcelain, specifically the vibrant palettes of late 19th and 20th-century Famille Rose and Rose Canton pottery.

If you are a fan of traditional Chinoiserie decor, these motifs will feel like old friends. In this design, I wanted to capture the festive energy of the classic elements:

The Peony: A lush, central pink bloom representing prosperity and romance.
The Butterflies: Whimsical accents fluttering through vibrant green botanicals.
The Shou ({壽}) Medallions: Four hand-painted symbols anchors the corners, traditionally representing longevity, good health, and a long life.

Instead of leaving these patterns in the past, I wanted to translate them into something substantial, sculptural, and functional for modern homes.

From Vintage Roots to Modern Fine Art

To give these traditional motifs a contemporary edge, I painted them using a vibrant mixed-media approach on cradled wood panels.

Each piece is small but incredibly mighty. Measuring 6”x6”, they feature an extra-thick 2 ½” deep profile. I painted the heavy wooden sides in a rich, metallic gold, which acts as a built-in luxury frame. To seal it all in, I applied a thick, liquid-like coat of high-gloss resin finish. The glassy topcoat locks in the color, giving the surface a brilliant, porcelain-like shine that catches the light beautifully from every angle.

Because of that chunky depth, these blocks are incredibly versatile. They are ready to hang as part of a gallery wall (they pair perfectly next to a classic plate wall setup!), but they are also thick enough to stand completely independently on a bookshelf, desk, or mantle.

A Limited Series of Hand-Painted Originals

Because true vintage porcelain is celebrated for its hand-crafted imperfections, I wanted this collection to feel just as personal. I have created a limited run of only 4 companion pieces in this exact configuration.

While they share the same joyful color palette and symbols, every single block is an individual original. Because they are completely hand-painted, no two are exactly alike—meaning your piece will carry its own unique brushwork, character, and spirit.
